asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department (1) how many persons are at present remanded in custody in Her Majesty's prisons in England;

(2) how many persons are at present remanded in custody in Her Majesty's prisons in Wales.

Dr. Summerskill

On 15th November 1974 there were 3,439 persons awaiting trial in prisons and remand centres in England and a further 1,800 who had been convicted and were awaiting sen- tence. The equivalent figures for Wales were 102 and 82.

(2) on 1st November 1974 what was the longest period a person remanded in custody had served in prison in Wales.
