HC Deb 02 December 1974 vol 882 c363W
Mr. Wm. Ross

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland how many full-time farmers there are in Northern Ireland; and how many of these are hill farmers.

Mr. Merlyn Rees

The June 1973 agricultural census, which indicated that there were 18,727 full-time farm businesses, did not provide data about the number of hill farmers. A sample survey in 1970, the latest year for which data are available, indicated that 4,220 farmers received hill cow and/or hill sheep subsidy.
