HC Deb 02 December 1974 vol 882 cc318-9W
Mr. Palmer

asked the Secretary of State for Energy whether he proposes to review the present structure of the electricity supply industry in England and Wales; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Varley

The present structure of the industry in England and Wales dates from 1957. Since then there have been many changes in the environment in which the industry operates. I believe that it is desirable to examine, in the light of experience and the new challenges facing the industry, whether the present structure is the best suited to meet the demands likely to be placed on the industry and the needs of electricity consumers. I have accordingly decided to set up a committee of inquiry with the following terms of reference: To examine the structure of the electricity supply industry in England and Wales and to report to the Secretary of State for Energy.

I am pleased to say that the Lord Plowden, KCB, KBE, Chairman of Tube Investments Limited, has agreed to be chairman of the committee and the following members to serve on it: Professor R. J. Ball, Mr. Frank Chappie, The Lord Kearton, OBE, FRS, The Baroness Seear, Sir Alan Wilson, FRS.
