asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what sums have been given to the Arts Council in each of the last 10 years.

The Government give a single grant to the Arts Council of Great Britain. The council determines, in the light of its consideration of the needs of its clients, what sums should be spent by the Scottish and Welsh Arts Councils. The following table analyses expenditure in England, Scotland and Wales which the council has authorised over the last 10 years. The table shows that expenditure in Scotland has increased by 838
