asked the Secretary of State for the Environment how many research requirement committees, or their equivalent, there are in his Department; what subjects they are concerned with; how many senior and other officers are involved with such committees; and what amount of money each one is concerned with individually and in aggregate.

Mr. Crosland

There are 15 research requirements committees, each based on a particular policy area, as indicated in the table below. Membership averages about 15 senior staff, plus a small secretariat, and the committees meet about three or four times a year. The costs of individual planned programmes for each committee for 1974–75 range from about
