HC Deb 30 April 1974 vol 872 cc433-4W
Sir P. Bryan

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food if he will give an estimate of the cost in extra imported pigmeat made necessary to make up the loss caused by the contraction in the national pig herd over the last six months.

Mr. Buchan

No. Reliable estimates of the size in our pig herd since last December are not yet available. Even when they are, an estimate of the kind requested would be extremely speculative, because the effect on our imports of pig-meat of a change in the size of our pig herd depends on a variety of unpredictable factors, including movements in the markets of other countries and for other meats.
