HC Deb 30 April 1974 vol 872 cc426-7W
Mr. Arthur Lewis

asked the Minister for the Civil Service whether he will give the category or grade of a stated civil servant who was in January 1972 on the same or approximate rate of pay as [...] Member of Parliament; what increases have been paid to date; and to what extent the salaries of Members of Parliament would have to be increased for them to receive the same percentage increase.

Mr. Robert Sheldon

A Civil Service principal on a salary of £4,462 on 1st January 1972 has received the following salary increases since that date:

£
1st April 1973 4,653
7th November 1973 5,150
1st January 1974 5,500

The increase on 7th November 1973 resulted from the first substantive pay review for this grade since 1st January 1971 and was made under those provisions of the stage 3 Pay Code which enabled standstill anomalies to be corrected. No similar increase would have been payable to Members. However, if the same percentage increase—23.3 per cent.—were applied to a Member's salary of £4,500 it would become £5,547.
