HC Deb 29 April 1974 vol 872 cc367-8W
Mr. George Rodgers

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what protection through the National Insurance (Industrial Injuries) Act is available to a prisoner when employed with a prison working party.

Dr. Summerskill

Prisoners' employment is not insurable under the National Insurance (Industrial Injuries) Acts but, under arrangements made by the Home Office, any prisoner who is likely to be disabled after discharge as a result of his prison employment is examined by a medical board set up by the Department of Health and Social Security and, on the board's recommendations, may be made payments in lieu of disablement benefit and related increases at the same rates as under the Acts
