HC Deb 29 April 1974 vol 872 cc368-9W
Mr. Sedgemore

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department (1) if he will make a statement on the events leading up to the establishment of an inquiry into the Lennon affair, the reasons why this inquiry was set up, and the reasons why this specific type of inquiry was thought appropriate;

(2) if he will consider moving for a Select Committee to investigate the range of activities of the Special Branch and its methods of operation.

Mr. Roy Jenkins

In the light of the statement given by Mr. Lennon to the National Council for Civil Liberties I decided that the first essential was to obtain urgently from the Commissioner of Police of the Metropolis a full account of the actions of Special Branch and other police officers concerned in this case. I have now received and am considering the commissioner's report, and I shall make a further statement as soon as possible.
