HC Deb 29 April 1974 vol 872 cc373-4W
Mr. Hooley

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what is the projected demand for fishmeal by the United Kingdom in 1974 and 1975; and what will be the main sources of supply.

Mr. Moyle

The demand for fishmeal which is used almost entirely in animal feeding stuffs varies according to its price and availability in relation to those of other protein materials used for this purpose. It is not practicable, therefore, to forecast the likely demand in 1974 and 1975 but usage in the past three years has been approximately as follows:

'000 tons
Home-produced Imported Total
1971 90 296 386
1972 87 354 441
1973 82 258 340

Most imported supplies normally come from Norway, Denmark, South and South-West Africa, Bermuda and Iceland.
