HC Deb 29 April 1974 vol 872 cc345-6W
Mr. David Howell

asked the Secretary of State for Energy when he intends to outline the proposals for the development of the coal finds in the Selby area.

Mr. Eadie

The first phase of exploratory boring and seismic work being carried out in the Selby area by the National Coal Board is due for completion by the end of June 1974. Before definite outline proposals can be made by the board, interpretation and evaluation of the geological evidence must be completed and, if necessary, further exploration carried out. On current indications, the Selby area has a potential to develop into a significant new coalfield and, if proven feasible, the initial development could be a drift mine producing as much as 10 million tons per year.
