§ 35. Mr. Hooleyasked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs whether he has any further information about the health of Mr. Miles who was arrested by the Tanzanian authorities in January of this year.
§ Miss Joan LestorThe High Commission in Dar-es-Salaam learned on 6th April that Mr. Miles had been transferred on 19th March from the hospital in Iringa, where the High Commissioner saw him on 11th February, to the prison in Dar-es-Salaam for clinical tests which could not be carried out in Iringa. He was examined by a prison doctor soon after his arrival and was given an insulin injection on 23rd March. He was visited by a consular officer on 6th April. He said that he was not feeling too well and complained of blurred vision and heartburn.
The High Commission protested to the Tanzanian authorities that the commission was not informed of Mr. Miles's transfer and asked for his immediate admission to the general hospital for an assessment of his medical condition. The commission was told on 8th April that Mr. Miles had been visited on that day by a medical specialist who had taken tests and issued a prescription.
