HC Deb 10 April 1974 vol 872 c174W
Mr. Luce

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will announce his decision on the route for an east to west trunk road through the Brighton-Southwick area.

Mr. Mulley

Following the recent consultation exercise on alternative proposals for the route, I have considered all the relevant factors including the various comments received and have decided that an outer route on the line described as either "Red" or "Purple" should be protected for planning purposes. A bypass scheme on this route will be included in the trunk road preparation pool at a later date. The need for the associated non-trunk road improvements in the centres of Brighton and Hove suggested in the plans will have to be considered by the new county councils as the local highway authorities for the roads concerned.
