HC Deb 09 April 1974 vol 872 cc126-7W
Mr. Fry

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will publish the quarterly figures for road accidents after lighting-up time in areas subject to 30 mph speed limits for 30th April 1972, and also for the four quarters immediately preceding.

Mr. Mulley,

pursuant to his reply [OFFICIAL. REPORT, 3rd April 1974; Vol. 871, c. 376–7], gave the following information:

Accidents in Darkness: Great Britain
All Severities: 30 mph Roads
Period 1972 Number
July—September 8,549
October—December 24,085
1973
January—March 16,820
April—June 8,620
July—September 9,850
October—December 22,526

The relatively high figure in the first quarter of 1972 may be attributed to cuts in street lighting because of the power crisis in February-March.

The relatively low figure in the fourth quarter of 1973 may be attributed to recent emergency regulations.
