HC Deb 09 April 1974 vol 872 c131W
Mr. Kinnock

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer how many retirement pensioners are receiving incomes up to £1,600 per annum; and what is his estimate of the sum they pay in tax.

Dr. Gilbert

The number of national insurance retirement pensioners with total incomes up to £1,600 a year in 1973–74 is about 5½ million counting husband and wife as one. The estimated amount of tax paid by this group is about £140 million.
