HC Deb 09 April 1974 vol 872 cc130-1W
Mr. Norman Lamont

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he will publish in the OFFICIAL REPORT a table showing the numbers of people with earned incomes in the following ranges, and what percentages of the workforce are in each group: (1) less than £1,500per annum, (2) £1,500 to £2,000, (3) £2,000 to £3,000, (4) £3,000 to £5,000, (5) £5,000 to £8,000, (6) £8,000 to £12,000, (7) £12,000 to £16,000, and (8) above £16,000.

Dr. Gilbert

For 1973–74 the figures are as follows:

Range of earned income £ per annum Numbers ('000) Percentage
1–1,500 7,930 37.4
1,500—under 2,000 4,005 18.9
2,000—under 3,000 6,120 28.9
3,000—under 5,000 2,720 12.8
5,000—under 8,000 320 1.5
8,000—under 12,000 65 0.3
12,000—under 16,000 18 0.1
16,000 and over 12 0.1
21,190 100.0

These figures are derived from Inland Revenue sources.

The numbers by range relate to individuals—counting married couples as one—with earned incomes, including retirement and occupational pensions, in the ranges specified, provided that their total incomes were above the effective tax exemption limit of .595. The available estimates for the working population are not on this basis and the percentages in the last column are therefore based on the total shown in the second column.
