HC Deb 09 April 1974 vol 872 cc119-21W
Mr. Ralph Howell

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will publish a table showing the total number of people employed by local authorities for each year since 1960; of these, how many were civil servants; and if he will publish the total envisaged for 1974–75.

Mr. Oakes

Figures published annually by the Department of Employment show that in June of each of the years since 1960 the total number of staff of all categories employed by local authorities in England, including police forces, was

000's
1960 1,440
1961 1,483
1962 1,543
1963 1,600
1964 1,668
1965 1,719
1966 1,808
1967 1,887
1968 1,948
1969 1,999
1970 2,037
1971 2,103
1972 2,205
1973 2,310

The figure for 1974 is of course not yet available, nor, at this stage, can any accurate estimate be made. No civil servants are employed by local authorities.

Mr. English

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment whether he will publish in the OFFICIAL REPORT, as soon as they are available, the numbers of persons employed in local government in comparable services on 1st April 1973 and 1st April 1974.

Mr. Oakes

This information is not available.
