HC Deb 09 April 1974 vol 872 c114W
Mr. Kinnock

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what is his estimate of adult illiteracy in Great Britain; and if he will take steps to reduce the rate.

Mr. Prentice

My Department does not collect information on which an estimate can be made for England and Wales. I welcome the work being done by many local authorities and voluntary bodies; and, in considering the recommendations in the Russell Report, including those on the disadvantaged, I shall have regard to the needs of adult illiterates.
