asked the Secretary of State for the Environment when he expects to announce his decision on the application to demolish the former Mechanics Institute and York House, Manchester.

My right hon. Friend announced his decision on 4th April. He has accepted the recommendations made by the inspector who held a public inquiry into the application, and has accordingly given consent for York House to be demolished but has decided that the former Mechanics Institute building must be preserved.
