HC Deb 08 April 1974 vol 872 c69W
Mr. Robert Taylor

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what is the amount of tax payable by two single persons sharing a home and each having an income of £900 from investments and the tax payable by a married couple with a total income of £1,800 from investments; and if he will take steps to equalise the rates.

Dr. Gilbert

On the basis of the tax rates and allowances proposed for 197475 in the Budget a married couple would pay £389 a year tax and two single persons a total of £182. As regards the second part of the Question I do not think it would be right to treat two people as if they were married when in fact they are not.
