HC Deb 08 April 1974 vol 872 c3W
Mr. Rooker

asked the Secretary of State for Trade what is the total of public money given to the hotel industry by way of grants in the past four years; and what degree of public control there is over such grants.

Mr. Deakins

Payments under Part II of the Development of Tourism Act 1969 amount to £40,717,149 for the four years to 31st March 1974. The conditions of eligibility are specified in the Act itself. Discretionary grants were also given by the national tourist boards in accordance with the provisions of Section 4 of that Act, and by the Highlands and Islands Development Board under the provisions of the Highlands and Islands Development (Scotland) Act 1965. Payment under these schemes is not confined to hotel projects and separate figures are not available. The accounts of all these boards are subject to audit by the Comptroller and Auditor General and are laid before Parliament.
