Mr. Bidwell

asked the Minister for the Civil Service what were the sums of money spent by each Government Department on insertions in newspapers; and what papers they were in the last quarter for which he has information.

The information as requested is not readily available and could only be obtained at disproportionate cost. However, in the financial year 1973–74 the total amount spent on newspaper and magazine advertising undertaken by the Central Office of Information on behalf of other Government Departments was £8,205,500. During the period January-March 1974, the following newspapers were used:>
