HC Deb 08 April 1974 vol 872 cc71-2W
Sir B. Rhys Williams

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what is the extent of the reduction in the national income through the withdrawal of pensioners from earning as a result of the operation of the earnings rule; and what is his estimate of the resulting loss of income tax.

Dr. Gilbert

I regret that there is no information on which estimates could be based.

Sir B. Rhys Williams

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what estimate he has made of the numbers of male and female pensioners who escape the payment of income tax through concealment of their earnings with a view to escaping the operation of the earnings rule.

Dr. Gilbert

I regret that it is not possible to make an estimate.
