HC Deb 05 April 1974 vol 871 c467W
Mrs. Lena Jeger

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department in how many cases, to the last convenient date, have alien husbands of United Kingdom wives been admitted to this country under the Immigration Rules; and how many applications have been refused.

Mr. Alexander W. Lyon

I regret that statistics are not available in the form requested. However, in the years 1968–1973 about 2,000 male foreign nationals a year were accepted for settlement by virtue of marriage.

Mrs. Lena Jeger

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what steps he is taking to harmonise with other EEC countries the laws regarding the right of entry and settlement of non-EEC nationals married to nationals of EEC countries.

Mr. Alexander W. Lyon

The entry and settlement of non-EEC nationals married to nationals of EEC countries coming to work in another EEC country are already governed by the EEC free movement of labour regulations, which all member States are bound to apply. Similar provisions apply where the EEC national is coming for self-employment or to set up in business in another EEC country. For the rest, entry and settlement are matters for the EEC country concerned.
