HC Deb 05 April 1974 vol 871 c455W
Mrs. Winifred Ewing

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what sum has been expended on preparatory studies on the Channel Tunnel project since it was initiated to date; where the money was spent; and if he will break the sum down into scientific research, public relations activities and other headings.

Mr. Crosland

Up to the end of Phase I—17th November 1973—the total expenditure on preparatory studies met from or recoverable from the funds of the project was about £9.3 million; about half was incurred in Britain and half in France. It is not possible to break this down in precisely the form requested. As the project is based on existing technology comparatively little was spent on scientific research. The main categories were:

£ million
Traffic, revenue and financial studies 1.31½
Engineering and design studies 5.6
Geological surveys etc 2.4

In addition, about £141,000 has been spent in Britain on studies of primarily British interest.
