HC Deb 04 April 1974 vol 871 c405W
Mr. McCusker

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland whether, in view of the fact that police reserve numbers are still below target, he will consider a review of the educational tests which have disqualified some suitable men, particularly from rural areas.

Mr. Orme

The Chief Constable has recently reviewed the educational requirements for admission to the Royal Ulster Constabulary Reserve and is satisfied that the present standard should be maintained.

Mr. McCusker

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland whether he will use the provision, which exists in the Act, to have more than one rank in the police reserve in order to instill responsibility and enthusiasm.

Mr. Orme

Regulations under the Act already permit a rank structure in the RUC Reserve, but the Chief Constable, who is responsible for such appointments, does not consider the time opportune for the introduction of supervisory ranks.
