HC Deb 04 April 1974 vol 871 c438W
Mr. Marks

asked the Secretary of State for Energy if he will review the maximum selling prices for petrol because the retailer's profit margin in the United Kingdom is the highest in the world.

Mr. Varley

No. The maximum selling prices for petrol do not prescribe the garages' margins, which are a matter between the garages and the oil companies subject to the limitations of the prices code. I have no evidence that garage margins in the United Kingdom are unduly favourable, but I shall be keeping the matter under review in the context of any revision of the Maximum Retail Price Order.
