asked the Secretary of State for Prices and Consumer Protection by how much the cost of a standard loaf rose between 18th June 1970 and 28th February 1974.

Mr. Maclennan

On the basis of information collected for the purposes of the Index of Retail Food Prices, the average price of a white, 1¾-lb. unwrapped loaf rose by 5.5p—62 per cent.—between 16th June 1970 and 19th February 1974. The price of a similar wrapped and sliced loaf rose by 5.2p—58 per cent.—over the same period.
