HC Deb 03 April 1974 vol 871 c401W
Mr. Michael Latham

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services how many persons working on a self-employed basis in the construction industry were prosecuted by her Department for alleged evasion of payments under the National Insurance Acts in each of the financial years 1972–73 and 1973–74; what percentage were convicted; and in how many cases the person concerned was unable to be traced.

Mr. O'Malley

Separate figures for the construction industry are not available but the numbers of self-employed persons prosecuted for alleged evasion of payments under the National Insurance Acts in the calendar years 1972 and 1973 were 8,570 and 9,043 respectively. All but three cases in 1972 and four cases in 1973 resulted in convictions.
