HC Deb 03 April 1974 vol 871 c394W
Mr. Skeet

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer, of the total retail price of gasolene per gallon, what is the percentage take of the United Kingdom Government in taxes; and how this compares with the average take of producer Governments from which the petroleum is derived.

Dr. Gilbert

The United Kingdom hydrocarbon oil duty and value added tax together account for 50 per cent. of the current average retail price of 4-star petrol. It is not possible to compare this with the take of producer Governments because their taxation varies widely according to the sources and types of crude oil, and because petrol accounts for only about one-seventh of United Kingdom oil consumption by volume.
