HC Deb 03 April 1974 vol 871 c373W
Mrs. Knight

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what steps he is taking to ensure that plans to route major traffic loads through the Lake District will not damage the natural beauty of this area.

Mr. Carmichael

Consultations with the Countryside Commission, the Lake District Planning Board and the highway authorities concerned about traffic management measures which might usefully be taken in the Lake District and its approaches are continuing.

In addition, protection of the character of the Lake District is a major consideration in the scrutiny of highway proposals which may influence traffic in the national park.
