HC Deb 02 April 1974 vol 871 cc299-301W
16. Mr. David Watkins

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what representations have been made to him by parents concerning the proposed reorganisation of secondary education in the Benfieldside and Moor-side areas of Consett.

Mr. Armstrong

Objections to the proposal to cease to maintain Benfieldside Secondary School have been received, together with a petition with over 1,300 signatures, and these are being considered.

30. Mr. Dykes

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what recent representations have been received by his Department concerning the reorganisation of secondary education in Harrow.

Mr. Armstrong

Objections signed by some 34,000 people have been received following the publication on 25th January of statutory notices relating to the proposed reorganisation of four Harrow schools.

42. Mr. Rost

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will consider exercising his powers in relation to the reorganisation of secondary education in South Derbyshire, whereby children in Melbourne and the surrounding areas continue with selective examinations in order to enter a nonselective system.

Mr. Armstrong

There are no statutory proposals before my right hon. Friend relating to secondary education in the Melbourne area. I appreciate the problem in the area and hope that it will be possible for the new Derbyshire authority to end selection before long.

48. Mr. Christopher Price

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what is his present policy on the reorganisation of secondary education.

Mr. Prentice

I informed the House on 15th March that consultations would take place before the issue of a new circular replacing Circular 10/70. Those consultations have begun and the circular should issue later this month. I intend to achieve a fully comprehensive system of secondary organisation.
