HL Deb 02 April 1974 vol 350 cc906-7WA
LORD O'HAGAN

asked Her Majesty's Government:

How much lead has been disseminated into the air from petrol in each of the last five years; and how much Her Majesty's Government's present measures will reduce such annual figures from now on.

LORD GARNSWORTHY

United Kingdom figures of lead usage in petrol in each of the last five years are as follows:

1969 8,300 tons
1970 8,800 tons
1971 10,600 tons
1972 11,800 tons
1973 12,100 tons
About three-quarters of lead used in petrol is emitted from vehicle exhausts. Present measures are aimed at reducing emissions to the 1972 level while a study is made of the need for further reductions.
