HC Deb 01 April 1974 vol 871 c274W
Mr. Faulds

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science when he intends to implement the recommendation in the Report on Provincial Museums and Galleries about the provision of finance for housing museums.

Mr. Hugh Jenkins

As a general principle the responsibility for housing their museums must remain with the local authorities concerned. However, I shall consider in the light of advice from the Standing Commission on Museums and Galleries whether, provided that a satisfactory basis for continued support by the authorities concerned can be achieved, some form of assistance can be given from the arts programme to museums of more than local significance.

Mr. Faulds

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what steps he intends to take, arising from the findings in Appendices F and G and the recommendations in Chapter 6 of the Report on Provincial Museums and Galleries, which relate to problems of staff gradings, salary levels and career structure.

Mr. Hugh Jenkins

The staff of local museums are employed by the authorities that maintain them and it is to these authorities that the recommendations relating to staff gradings, salary levels and career structure are addressed. Local authorities have already been circularised about these recommendations.
