asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry if he has discussed the proposed sugar refining monopoly company with the EEC Commission; and if he will make a statement on any discussions held.

I would refer my hon. Friend to the reply given today to his Question to my right hon. Friend the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food.

asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry if he will refer the proposed merger between Tate and Lyle Limited, Manbre and Garton and the British Sugar Corporation to the Monopolies Commission for its immediate consideration.

Discussions on the future of the sugar refining industry are still proceeding. and no firm proposals have been arrived at.

asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry if his Department was involved in the discussions held between the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, Tate and Lyle Limited, Manbre and Garton and the British Sugar Corporation about the creation of a single company with a monopoly of sugar refining in this country; and, if so, what advice his Department gave.

My Department has been involved in the discussions about the future of the sugar refining industry. I would refer my hon. Friend to the report on the progress of these discussions which was given by my right hon. Friend the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food during the course of yesterday's Supply debate.
