asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what is the total of Government spending on medical research in each of the past five years; and what proportion of this relates to Scotland.

Total Government expenditure on medical research in the past five years was approximately as follows:

In 1972–73 about 12 per cent. of the total expenditure was undertaken in Scotland.
