HC Deb 25 October 1973 vol 861 cc664-5W
Dr. Marshall

asked the Minister of State for Defence whether he will give typical examples of the present annual rent and floor area of married quarters for other ranks of the Army in the South-East Economic Planning Region.

Mr. Blaker

The floor area of a married quarter varies with the age of the house. According to the standards now applied for new construction there are three types of married quarters provided for other ranks which are:

Type D 4 bedroom 1,232 sq. ft.
Type C 3 bedroom 963 sq. ft.
Type B 2 bedroom 850 sq. ft.

The annual rental charges for these quarters, which are let furnished, are common world-wide and are £313.90 for the type D, £273.75 type C and £233.60 type B, assuming no rent rebate.

The rents of married quarters provided for members of the Armed Forces are assessed by the independent Armed Forces Pay Review Body, which has continued to apply a formula devised by the National Board for Prices and Incomes in January 1970 (Cmnd. 4291). Current charges for each type of quarter are set out in the latest report of the Review Body (Cmnd. 5336).
