Mr. Meacher

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what was the annual percentage increase in national average earnings in Great Britain, United States of America, Japan and each EEC country for each year since 1960; and what was the annual percentage increase in the retail price index and the annual percentage increase in productivity in manufacturing industry in each of these countries for each of these years.

The information available is given in the following table. The figures for wages and salaries per head have been derived from national accounts statistics supplied by member countries to the OECD and the EEC. The figures for the United Kingdom are consistent with the latest estimates contained in National Income and Expenditure 1973. Movements in retail prices have been obtained from data contained inMain Economic Indicators published by the OECD. Changes in output per head in manufacturing industry for countries other than the United Kingdom have been taken from the 1972 and earlier editions of the International Labour Office Yearbook of Labour Statistics.
