HC Deb 25 October 1973 vol 861 cc631-2W
Mr. Sutcliffe

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what is the estimated cost of land acquisition in respect of the rail link between the Channel Tunnel terminal and the White City at 1973 prices and allowing for future price increases coupled with interest charges, respectively; and if this cost is included in the total estimated cost of £120 million at 1973 prices and £200 to £220 million, allowing for financing costs and inflation.

Mr. Peyton

£9 million for land acquisition was included in the estimated cost of the rail link in 1973 prices. Future price increases and interest charges could make this sum £15 million-£16 million. Much of the land required is already in railway ownership.

Mr. Laurance Reed

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment how he has satisfied himself that the Channel Tunnel project is consistent with the United Kingdom's obligations in international law.

Mr. Peyton

This was considered in 1963 by the Anglo-French joint working group whose report was published as a Cmnd. 2137. The position has not changed since then.
