HC Deb 25 October 1973 vol 861 cc583-4W
40. Mr. Rose

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food whether he will take action to implement the recommendations of the Committee on the Export of Animals for Slaughter submitted to him by the Manchester Corporation.

Mrs. Fenner

We have received no recent representations from the Manchester Corporation on this subject. The Committee on the Export of Animals for Slaughter has not yet made any recommendations.

Mr. Biffen

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food when he expects to receive the report of the O'Brien Committee and European Community Commission reports on the export of live animals for slaughter; and what effect the present restrictions have had on farm income.

Mrs. Fenner

We hope to receive the report of Lord O'Brien's committee by the end of the year. The EEC has begun discussions on animal welfare at expert level, but I cannot forecast the form in which the results of this work will appear. We do not expect the present export restrictions to have any significant effect on farm income.
