§ Mr. St. John-StevasThe dependants' grant for unmarried mothers has not been abolished. My right hon. Friend has set up a scheme to cover cases of hardship for those students, including unmarried mothers, who do not qualify for dependants' allowances under the Awards Regulations, and who formerly relied on discretionary grants from their local education authority or on the Supplementary Benefits Commission. Under this scheme the allowance for the first child of an unmarried woman student with no adult dependant was £2.02 a week in respect of term time. It has now been increased to £4.81 a week.
