HC Deb 27 November 1973 vol 865 cc82-3W
30. Mr. William Price

asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many days have been lost in the motor industry as a result of industrial action so far in 1973.

Mr. Chichester-Clark

1,812,000 working days were lost through stoppages in progress in the motor industry in the period 1st January 1973 to 31st October 1973.

32. Mr. Madel

asked the Secretary of State for Employment whether, in view of the number of disputes and stoppages that have occurred in 1973 in the motor industry, he is satisfied with the existing arrangements for conciliation in that industry through the Motor Council ; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Maurice Macmillan

The Joint Council for the Motor Vehicle Manufacturing Industry is an independent body consisting of representatives of the four major motor vehicle manufacturers, two major component suppliers and leaders of the trade unions in the industry. My Department is not represented on the council but is following with interest the proposals at present under consideration by the council for identifying and removing the causes of friction and disputes in the industry. I welcome this latest initiative by the council.
