HC Deb 23 November 1973 vol 864 c536W
Mr. Donald Stewart

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what warnings are issued to fishermen concerning the dumping of radioactive wastes.

Mr. Gordon Campbell

I have been asked to reply.

Solid radioactive wastes from the United Kingdom are dumped in the deep Atlantic as part of an internationally supervised operation. The dumping area has a depth of water of about three miles and is well beyond our fishing grounds. Some liquid wastes containing a limited amount of radioactivity are discharged into certain coastal waters, under strict control. No specific warnings to fishermen are considered necessary in either case.
