HC Deb 22 November 1973 vol 864 cc488-9W
Mr. Roper

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what his Department is doing to encourage companies to abolish assembly line working; and whether he will seek for it to be given priority in the EEC Social Action programme.

Mr. Maurice Macmillan

I have set up, in association with the TUC and CBI, a Tripartite Steering Group on Job Satisfaction, under the chairmanship of my hon. Friend the Minister of State. This group aims to stimulate action in all fields of employment which it is hoped will lead to lasting improvements in the satisfaction people derive from their work. The group is particularly concerned with the actual content of jobs and how work is organised.

I welcome the European Commission's proposal to undertake further examination of the human social and economic effects of repetitive work.
