§ Mr. Bishopasked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry what is his assessment regarding the future supply of newsprint in relation to future needs of the newspaper industry; and if he will take steps to encourage the collection of waste paper by local authorities and other means in order to increase available stocks.
§ Mr. Anthony GrantI understand that the arrangements which have been made by the newspaper industry to ensure that newspapers receive essential supplies of newsprint are working satisfactorily, and I have no reason at present to think that they will not continue to do so. However, we shall keep the position under review in the light of continuing discussions with the newsprint producers and the newspaper publishers. Local authorities are already encouraged to collect waste paper if they consider it worth while to do so.
