Mr. David Priceasked the Secretary of State for Education and Science to what extent she intends to modify the figures given in her recent White Paper, "Education: A Framework for Expansion", Command Paper No. 5174, for the expansion of student places in the universities from 236,000 in the academic year 1971–72 to 375,000 in 1981–82 in the light of the recent report of the Universities' Central Council on Admissions; and if she will make a statement.
§ Mrs. ThatcherProjections of student numbers are revised from time to time. As we move through the decade, new data, including reports of the kind to which my hon. Friend refers, may cause us to revise last year's estimate of what the policies on higher education set out in the White Paper would require by 1981.
