HC Deb 12 November 1973 vol 864 c39W
Mr. Alfred Morris

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if she will make a statement on the progress of negotiations on the salaries and career structure for teachers of the deaf and hearing impaired.

Mr. St. John-Stevas

The salaries and salary structure of these teachers are a matter for the Burnham Committee. The current Burnham document gives discretion to local education authorities to determine the number of higher paid posts in these schools.

Mr. Alfred Morris

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if she is taking any measures to attract qualified teachers of high calibre to undertake the special course of training required for teaching the hearing impaired.

Mr. St. John-Stevas

For existing courses there is no evidence overall of a shortage of suitably qualified candidates. My right hon. Friend is, however, concerned to improve the supply of teachers of the deaf by increasing training facilities, and the Department is considering what measures will be needed to encourage recruitment.
