Mr. Sydney Chapman

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland, if he will list in the OFFICIAL REPORT his Department's estimate of the total number of dwellings in Scotland, and the breakdown of those numbers by type and ownership.

The estimated numbers of dwellings in each tenure group at December 1972 were:

Rented from local authorities, New Towns and SSHA 969,000
Owner-occupied 567,000
Rented from private owners 175,000
Other tenures 118,000
Total Scotland 1,829,000

Corresponding figures for dwelling type are not available. The following estimated percentage breakdown of households in each dwelling type is based on the General Household Survey for 1972:
