HC Deb 15 May 1973 vol 856 c307W
Mr. Bishop

asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry (1) what representations he has had regarding newsprint shortages following the proposed closure of Peter Dixon and Sons, Grimsby; whether he was represented at recent discussions between members of the newsprint supply industry and newspaper proprietors; and if he will make a statement;

(2) if he is aware of the concern of proprietors of weekly and provincial newspapers facing the prospect of closure due to the shortage of newsprint sources; and if he will seek to discuss this matter with those concerned;

(3) if he will seek talks with the Newspaper Proprietors Association regarding the financial situation in the newsprint supply industry; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Anthony Grant

I have had representations on behalf of certain newspapers which are concerned with the shortage of newsprint. I am being kept informed of the action which is being taken by the industry to deal with the situation, but I see no need to intervene at the present time.
