HL Deb 10 May 1973 vol 342 cc590-1WA
LORD BARNBY

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether, since it has been decided that a subvention be given to Zambia to reinforce railway routes into and out of Zambia, they will state:

  1. (a) What is the gauge of the Zambian railways; and
  2. (b) What is the gauge of the railway being constructed from Dar-es-Salaam to the Zambian border.

BARONESS TWEEDSMUIR OF BELHELVIE

Her Majesty's Government's £1 million loan granted to Zambia is for road transport equipment.

The gauge of Zambia Railways and also of the railway now under construction under the auspices of the Tanzania-Zambia Railway Authority (TAZARA) is 1,067 mm. (3 ft. 6 in.) (p. 103 The Railway Directory and Year Book 1972).
